 The 7  Churches (Ecclesia)

Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.  --  Rev 1:11 (KJV)

Who is the book written to?

          1. The 7 Churches or the 7 Ecclesia  (Ecclesiastical)

Ecclesia - A called out assembly

Called out from among all others

The Greek word does not have to mean the "church"

it can mean a secular assembly

Acts 19:28 And when they heard these sayings, they were full of wrath, and cried out, saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion: and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. 31 And certain of the chief of Asia, which were his friends, sent unto him, desiring him that he would not adventure himself into the theatre. 32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly (evkklhsi,a) (ecclesia) was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together.

39 But if ye enquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly (evkklhsi,a|)  (ecclesia) .

40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. 41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly (evkklhsi,an) (ecclesiam).

The Greek word is used in the Septuagint Old Testament to dentote the "Jewish" assembly or congregation

Occurs 75 times in the Old Testament (Septuagint)

70 times is translated from the Hebrew Cahal

Cahal - Called together to Assemble

Cahal occurs 123 times in the Old Testament (Hebrew)

                                    83 times rendered Congregation

(congreg·) gather into a flock, gather together

                                    17 times rendered Assembly

                                                (comiti·rum) assembly

                                    17 times rendered Company

                                                (coetus) meeting, gathering, company

                                      3 times rendered Multitude

                                                (multus) much, many, multitude

                                    NEVER RENDERED as Church

Psalm 22:22 I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation (evkklhsi,aj) (lh'q') (ecclesia) will I praise thee.

Hebrews 2:12 Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church  (evkklhsi,aj) (lh'q') (ecclesia) will I sing praise unto thee.

Acts 7:37-38

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.  --  Acts 7:37 (KJV)

This is he, that was in the church (evkklhsi,a) (lh'q') (ecclesia)  in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

The Greek word ecclesia came to denote the church as it became a new word in the Latin language.  The literal meaning or translation does NOT mean "Church" but rather

a more generic term for "congregation" or "assembly"

Note that Moses and the Jews are called the church in the wilderness.  This is simply to say the congregation or assembly in the wilderness.
