Lesson 3

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, -- Heb 6:1 (KJV)
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. -- Heb 6:2 (KJV)
I. Different Baptisms in the New Testament
A. Baptism of Repentance (Baptism of John)
Acts 19:1
And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, -- Acts 19:1 (KJV)
He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. -- Acts 19:2 (KJV)
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. -- Acts 19:3 (KJV)
Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. -- Acts 19:4 (KJV)

B. Baptism of Example (Baptism of
Jesus)
Mat 3:13
Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. -- Mat 3:13 (KJV)
But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? -- Mat 3:14 (KJV)
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. -- Mat 3:15 (KJV)
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: -- Mat 3:16 (KJV)

C. Baptism of Suffering (Baptism of Pressure)
Luke 12:50
But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! -- Luke 12:50 (KJV)

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire. -- Mark 10:35 (KJV)

And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized: -- Mark 10:39 (KJV)
But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared. -- Mark 10:40 (KJV)
Luke 22:31

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. -- Acts 2:38 (KJV)

E. Baptism Of The Holy Spirit
Acts 11:15
Sent to Cornelius,
And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. -- Acts 11:15 (KJV)
Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. -- Acts 11:16 (KJV)

II. The Doctrine Of Water Baptism
A. Definition of the word baptize, baptism
1. Greek root bapto - to dip something into a fluid and then take it out. To cover with a fluid.
2. Greek word baptizo - to cause something to be dipped, to be plunged; to be submerged into.

1. Israel and the Red Sea (Ex. 13-14)

C. New Testament Teaching On Water Baptism
1. Repentance must preceed baptism (Acts 2:37-38)
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. -- Acts 2:38 (KJV)
2. Death and Seperation from Sin (Rom 6:3-7)
Rom 6:3
Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? -- Rom 6:3 (KJV)

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. -- Rom 6:6 (KJV)
3. Identification With Christ
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. -- Rom 6:4 (KJV)

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; -- Col 2:13 (KJV)
Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; -- Col 2:14 (KJV)

6. Baptized Into Christ (Not a denomination)
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. -- Gal 3:26 (KJV)
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. -- Gal 3:27 (KJV)
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. -- Gal 3:28 (KJV)
